Below: Charles writes to brother Warren with family updates and heartfelt expression of dreams lost due to being “chained” to the care of his mother and half-sisters. In this letter Charles reveals the longing and deep regret he feels from not fulfilling his aspirations and actually speaks of the repercussions that would incur if he were to leave. Also, Charles pleads with Warren to locate and purchase land in Texas before it’s too late. This letter reveals the internal struggle Charles is dealing with resulting from years of stress and could be an indication that he was reaching his limit. Given his disappearance in 1850 and the fact that he discusses leaving in this letter, one has to wonder if he did actually abandon his family in Buffalo.
